What is a Radial Shaft Seal (Oil Seal)?
Radial Shaft Seal, commonly known as Oil Seal, is a sealing element installed between the rotary shaft and the fixed housing. Its main function is to prevent the lubricating oil from leaking out, and at the same time to prevent external dust, moisture and other contaminants from entering the machine.
An oil seal usually consists of three main parts:
- Sealing Lips: Elastic rubber material, tightly fit on the surface of the rotary shaft to form an effective seal.
- Metal Skeleton: Provides structural strength to ensure that the oil seal will not deform or fall off after installation.
- Spring Ring: Apply appropriate pressure to keep the sealing lips close to the shaft surface to compensate for wear.

Radial Shaft Seal Working Principle

Initial Installation
When the oil seal is installed, the sealing lips form an initial contact with the shaft surface and the spring provides the appropriate radial force.

Oil film build-up
When the shaft starts to rotate, an extremely thin lubrication film is formed between the sealing lips and the shaft surface, with a thickness of only a few micrometers.

Dynamic Balance

Correct shaft diameters, outer diameters and widths are the basis for successful sealing and must be measured to two decimal places.
Working Temperature
Select the appropriate material according to the operating temperature of the equipment, NBR is suitable for -40°C~120°C, and FKM can reach 200°C or above.
